Composition of A Tear

Composition of A Tear

A Poem by Lissy

Composition of a tear:

The only ones to see them clearly

Know the desperation of those to whom the dirt clings

You would think

Splayed across my rocky convictions,

A tenant of stubbornness

I would’ve noticed them

She came to me with fistfuls of starfish

Reminders that the ocean has more secrets than i

Her passages coiled around my ears,

Concealed the places where I had no answers

Faintly, I began to hear their percussion

There were nights when she enveloped my afflictions-

Abrasive as I am;

Let me lay beneath them and be eternal as the elements.

Yet the tempo of my diversions

Defied their fervor.

I was dense as fury and when you live like that;

Occupy a season with such authority,

You miss each turn of the wheel.

I saw their silhouette once; when I forgot to blink

I had knelt in an alcove of odds and ends, trinkets,

Mingled in the complacency of deja-vu

Let the soles of my memory soak in familiarity

It was there, in the salve of candlelight

She kissed a chorus into me

Fastened the melody of spring into the breath in my

Lungs so that she could hum through my veins.

Even with my eyes closed, they came into view

Opaque at first

Like a star who shoulders through storm

Clouds to live up to its ideals until…

It breaks through

Bright as a halo, devoted as an angel

I am overshadowed by your wings

In that moment, I was taught to compose a tear.
