Extra Ordinary

Extra Ordinary

A Poem by John Hocher

Extra Ordinary

I’m not short, I’m not tall,

I’m not fat, and I’m not skinny.

I’m not smart, I’m not stupid,

I don’t go with the flow, but I don’t fight the current.

I’m a white, Christian, male.

If there was a human default, it would be me.

I’m society's definition of perfectly ordinary.

It was like I was made to blend in,

So others could stand out.

There’s nothing wrong with my life,

And there’s nothing to complain about.

But why do I feel like a number on a timeline that’s out of place,

Like I’m a puzzle with one missing piece,

Like I was designed for something greater but was just a prototype.

Like a step stool to greatness,

And doormat to success.

But I will be the mold to break the mold.

"...Like I was designed for something greater but was just a prototype." This is your key line here, it tells you that you already know what you are: prototype--a thing to be replicated or learned from. Your are an original and your writing is very clean, and you are very, very fortunate to find out this early in your life. You can't help but succeed.

Really nice poem that ensnares the idea of being society's "normal" or "average".
