Would You Care?

I hate everything I am

Because it is what you created

Both physically and emotionally.

After years of you telling me

That nothing I do is good enough;

That I don’t dress the way you think I should;

That I didn’t inherit your ‘good looks’;

That my brain isn’t working well;

That I’m podgy;

That I’m pathetic;

That only losers cry;

I finally get it –

You hate everything I am too.

At one stage all I wanted

Was to make you proud,

But my attempts were in vain –

Nothing I did was good enough.

I often wonder how you would cope

If you no longer had me to put down.

Would you finally acknowledge

That I was once there?

Would you even notice

That I’m not there anymore?

Would you care

If  you saw my lifeless body

Bleeding and dangling from the ceiling?

No.

You’d be to busy congratulating yourself

That you were right for calling me weak…

A deep bitterness and pain just moves so powerfully through your words. You convey so clearly the anxiety that comes through so many relationships (parent/child or boyfriend/girlfriend) trying to please someone else and realizing it can never be enough!
