Advice for the Apocalypse

Advice for the Apocalypse

A Poem by K.C. Zbryk
"

The mountains are burning and the storms here have been amazing... The smell of smoke while it rains does strange things to a mans mind..

"

The scruffy faced man carries

A sign

It reads, ‘the end is near’

And I can’t help but think

After reading this

That the lights seem dimmed

And he is simply standing on the street corner

Like so many others

But I wander on past a burning trash can

And realize it is only reflecting my mountains

They are burning

Spitting smoke

Into the setting sun

But the rain falling on my head feels nice

Cooling me while I walk down the cracked sidewalk

Between the decaying buildings

And as the sun disappears

The clouds bolster

The rain falls harder filling the streets

Overflowing the drains and just when I am about to beg for it to stop

Lightning flashes and thunder tears through the sky

Vibrating the grey mass above

Shaking the hail from its confines

Driving me to the shelter of an inset doorway

All ready occupied by my friend with the sign

Ice pelts the buildings

Knocking mortar from bricks

Breaking glass on buildings and cars alike

All I can do is stare from the shelter

With my companion, the end is near still clutched in his hands

As the end unfolds around us

The horizon glows red from the fire

Only dimmed by the white hot lightning

While the city

Is buried in ice

I looked at my companion

Card board held like a shield

And asked,

“Is this it?”

He smiled shook his head

And said, “Nowhere near my friend,”

And pulled a bottle from his rags

“So take a drink and enjoy the show

We have some to kill.”
