Nothing Lonely

Nothing Lonely

A Poem by Katie Kistler

my darling I
could not make anything up even if I tried
like you’re sitting in my mouth just writing rhymes
nothing that I had was ever mine
cause it was yours
from the moment that I saw you
yours
standing there outside my door
nothing lonely sticks around no more

and did you know
that one day you would find a kindred soul?
somebody to love as you grew old
somebody to have, someone to hold
it’s bittersweet
practically a quarter century
all this time you could have spent with me
but now I’ll hold your hand until you leave

the scent of perfume where you laid
the small bits of hair found astray
your water bottle misplaced
and the way you say my name

the sound of your laugh on the phone
sweetest kisses that I’ve known
sweeter still when we’re alone
I’m finally building a home
