Tethered

Tethered

A Poem by Kay

We're standing on opposites sides of a crowded room,
mouths tightly shut, eyes cast down in gloom,
but I hear you so clearly.

We're two amongst billions of shadows moving fast,
clicking their heels, sucking their teeth at the past,
yet somehow I know you dearly.

I look in the mirror and watch you tuck your hair behind an ear,
bite the corner of your lip the way I do and wish to disappear,
getting ready to climb in bed with your unyielding fear.

We're watching the same moon and I'm imagining your face,
our tired eyes searching for a far-off place,
swinging on Saturn's rings and dancing in space.

What are the chances of drawing the one white marble in bottomless black?
What are the chances that the dream you desire desires you back?

If I walk away, I feel a tug - no
it only feels right stepping wherever you go.

Your name is all I need to know.
