Prelude

Prelude

A Poem by Ken e Bujold

A few reluctant feet left … this
poem suggests itself, but
iamb unwilling to submit
to inky permanence, remain transient:

as if, pen abhors
posterity’s finding --
too liking to others
lacking vigoroso of a wild rose.

My fear is reason, reaved of rhythm
and rhyme, wrung of seasons
shall leave me nowhere …
some small inconsequential slice

of life marginally memorable --
though what other purpose is there?
One writes, like a finger through the dust
waiting, the inevitable rain

only a matter of time … when then

This is intelligent and moving. Which is a difficult hoe to row. Your innermost feelings writ in such a way. I find this extraordinary. The fact that all is temporary.
and the idea of writing in the dust. Remarkable.

It seems like you are thinking that most things in life are temporary.... that nothing is permanent, like a footprint in the sand, or poem's shelf life, that writing is just small piece of life... that eventually it will die like everything else....the footprints will be washed away by the rain.....very well written with an important message....
Warmly, B

I do like the idea of writing poetry in the dust, but perhaps writing them in the air would be more beneficial to my health, as well as keeping the gossips from criticising my cleaning skills. 😊
And I also like the lack of inky permanence, which has made me think it's about time to get out my coloured pencils and use a different colour for every line.
I would use crayons, but despite acting like a child, I am so very far away from that long, long ago.
You have given me the thought of writing on a pristine beach, before anyone arrives, and watch them trample my words into non existence once more, before the sea deletes them permanently from existence.
I think I was reaved of rhyme as a young lad, as after I looked it up to see what it meant and then wrote it on a post it note, before adding it to my goldfish bowl of words and ideas (well, doesn't everyone & thanks for the new word too btw)
And your end line must be on many people's minds right now, although not many Scots need more right now and will gladly send some your way, it is hard not to think like the ancients thought, that we are doomed for our past mistakes and not even offering up a sacrifice would change their minds... Although I could suggest a list of politicians to start with, as could many no doubt. 😊

I have been writing for 52 years. Somedays, hard to begin. Lately, I have been editing my 40 years old poetry Ken.
"of life marginally memorable --

The above lines. Maybe we must feel the inevitable rain? Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

This is a fantastic. The third stanza should be taught in MFA programs. Your time off has honed your edge, sharpened your wedged shape, and you have delivered Hesperides.

Your poem is a beautiful and poignant reflection on the power and fragility of language, and how it can be both fleeting and enduring. Your use of language is both elegant and evocative, and I found myself feeling deeply moved by the emotions you convey. The line "One writes, like a finger through the dust / waiting, the inevitable rain" is especially powerful - it's a reminder that even the most temporary things in life can still have a lasting impact.
