Rivers in Your Mouth

Rivers in Your Mouth

A Poem by Kirsty Woodward

It’s the most painful experience

to live with nothing to live for

to hold hands with your demons

and have them sit on your shoulders

weighing you down

because people will push you to breaking point

hour after hour

day by day

and when you eventually snap

they’ll tell you you’re a bit too touchy.

we are told too keep our emotions in check

but what does that even mean

i’ve said it before

and i’ll say it again

I am human

and I am dying

and the sweat

blood

and tears

pours from my palms like the Niagara Falls.

Hmm. Seems we are all writing about rivers today.

You are right. No matter how old we are, we are all dying. Even a newborn has started on its path towards death. So, under such circumstances one should always slay their own demons and take life by the scruff of the neck and live it to its full potential.

The final stanza sums up your poem perfectly. Nice work.

Thank you, Doodley. Said well and I appreciate your comment.
Wow. so powerful and packed with feeling. first stanza grabs you and pulls you in. can feel every line of this. such strong imagery. great ending. clever/creative title. suppression only leads to depression. so true, not a good way to live at all.
