The Burning Cities

The Burning Cities

A Poem by Katarzyna Anna Koziorowska

I ran out of spite to burning cities,
tired of war orders.
I wanted to catch up with the past,
but the future took over all my fear.

Unnecessary remorse wanders among
the pages of the calendar,
robbing the time of priceless seconds.
I tried to paint my life again,
but I ran out of black paint.

I tried to see you in my mirror,
in my dangerous dream,
but life had tripped over my heart.
Why are your prayers not addressed?
Why has your world fallen to its knees?

My last tear was frozen.
My conscience is shaking with cold.
I miss your smile at breakfast.
I need dreams that carry
painful shadows instead of light.

I lied to your time again.
Eternity resurrected as I screamed out
my fear, swallowed human envy.
