Stab in the Dark

Stab in the Dark

A Poem by Kris Merrells

There’s a moment

On a warm, hazy summer’s night

When the sun has gone

And the mosquitoes are out

And the streets are quiet

And I’m sitting

In an all-night donut shop

In the heart of downtown

With the Red Sox batting

In the top of the ninth

And the Angels are losing at home

When an electronic squeal

Lets me

And woman hiding in the back

Know that someone’s just walking in

And I wonder…

Why did I have to sit with my back to the door?

The Angels came back in the bottom of the 9th to tie it up, and won in 11.
