A House Underground

A House Underground

A Poem by Kuo Yisheng

I live in a house that’s underground

And as much as I’d like to move

I wouldn’t sell this property to anyone

Everyone’s under the sun and I am under them

There’s some things that you can’t see when you’re up upon the surface

I see your drainage pipes and the gas valves to your furnace

I see the way your sewage flows, and how your wires knot

I huddle close to the steam overflows when my passions running hot

Haven’t let people in to visit

If I did, not like you could see

Been here so long among my darkness

Hats off to my adaptability

But they ask me how it is

Living underground

I laugh and say it’s lovely

Received by smiles all around

I’ve passed the test, cover secure

You will not find my hatch

I’ve got locks on locks on locks

Wouldn’t let you get attached

Sometimes I elevate

But then I get the bends

I wouldn’t want me to be happy for too long

Either way it’s just pretend

Because I’m not one who lives above ground

I’m here scratching the belly of the surface

Someone came running by, kicked dirt in my eye

They must’ve done it on purpose

If they come running by again

I’ll reach out of the ground

I’d grab them by the ankle

and then I’d drag them down

I’d pierce right through the surface

I’d rip and tear it all

People around me falling in

Like I am a sinkhole
