The Door

The Door

A Poem by Lacey

I hear it.
I hear it ever so faintly.
"Tap"
........"Tap"
................"Tap"
I shrug it off likes it's nothing.
Ignoring the sound.
Time passes and I can hear it again.
"Knock"
.........."Knock"
....................."Knock"

Hesitant,
I look towards the door.
Debating what's on the other side.
But, trepidation overwhelms me.
And again I turn away.
Ignoring the sound is now becoming harder, but I'm managing.
More time passes and I jolt upwards at the sound
"Thump"
..........."Thump"
......................."Thump"
I want to answer but,
instead I run as far away as I can.
Hiding in a corner I hear it getting louder.
"Bang"
........"Bang"
................"Bang"
Screaming
"I'm not answering the door!"
but I don't know if it's me or the fear talking.
Tears flowing
Weight of the world over bearing.
I put my head between my knees.
Rocking back and forth
I whisper softly into my tear stained knees,
"God, where are you. I need you."
Unexpectedly I hear a faint voice from behind the door say,
"My child, let me in. I'm here."
I slowly walk towards the door.
Not knowing what to expect
I reach for the door knob,
Hands shaking,
Perspiration accumulating...
fear dancing in my eyes.
One deep breath I turn the knob,
Opening the door.
A rush of relief overflows me,
The weight of the world is lifted off my shoulders.
And I'm embraced with such love.
He says to me
"I've been waiting at the door of your heart for so long."
"You were never meant to carry the hardships of this life alone,
I love you and I will never leave you."
