Cupids Worthless Arrow

Cupids Worthless Arrow

"

The arrow was as worthless as the love that went with it.

"

Cupids Worthless Arrow

It was many a many year ago,

In a kingdom by the sea,

A maiden with pitch long black hair,

With legs so strong they should not be.

He stood there so tall and handsome,

Her heart simply skipped a beat,

He turned his green dancing eyes at her,

She tried but she could not speak!

Cupid’s arrow flew strong and swift,

Piercing her directly through her heart,

From that very moment blind was she,

To any other, “Love “ from his apart.

So in Love was she a slave she became,

Obeyed his every wish or command,

But he dangled her on a year after yearly string,

Only gallantry kissing her hand.

As the years went by she could only feel,

Swindled out of her heart that turned to stone,

For he chased her and left her so many times,

She always ended up ALONE!

But that worthless arrow was faux,

Not pure gold only shinny new brass,

Like him and his fake “Love”,

Its worth wore out and turned to BLACK!

AND STILL SHE PONDERS… “IS HE HAPPY?”

The only thing I don't think is quite right (very right) in this poem is the last line. I like the meaning, but it doesn't feel quite like it should be worded that way to me. Instead of "Is he happy?" I feel like I want it to say, "What did he get out of me?" Or "What was it worth to HIM?" Something like that. I love that you appropriate the Little Mermaid story (more the Grimm's version than Disney) for this poem. I think hijacking a storyline in this way is terrific! It makes for great efficiency of telling a much bigger story that you could not go into in a concise way without just using cultural reference points to almost instantly zero in on an exact specific situation, which you do so well here. Faked love is always so upsetting and hard to explain or define, but we all have had this experience I think at least once...If we have experience with different lovers. There are those people out there who like the idea of being in a relationship much more than they actually feel the reality of it in their hearts. It is so odd to feel that way. It is like you suddenly looked up and realized you were kissing a cardboard cutout of the perfect person for you. You look in the mirror and see the brown paper at the back and your own stupidly puckered face and wonder how you could have been so foolish. Why did the kiss taste like nothing? Also, I think the arrow could have been less substantial even than brass...black plastic painted with gold! Great job defining something hard to define!

This is splendid. How moving. That's what we called unconditional love. I understand how love brings tears to some people...
