The Alps At Night

The Alps At Night

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

walking..

"
the ribs of falling night
cold flints of Autumn,a dark curtain
                 creating two rooms

nameless stumps of broken teeth,
melted to the white rock jaw
                 heavy as the light is bad,

the path a black swan`s neck
tubular and serrated,
                 a tunnel of guarding pines

and the tree line that grabs the swallowed sun,
a tense spring under the forest floor;
                 pushing me along,

the air as quiet as a stone`s face
the half silence of a broken bell
                 leaves moving with half life

So all light has fled into the sky ;
just the small spots of dropped stars
                a road down the distant valley.

A real poem with brilliant images. Hailing from the other end of the world, I never thought about this mountain....but now when I imagine a stroll through the tunnel of guarding pines, I am excited.....I loved the poem...a well written/pictured poem.....

I was stationed in Germany for three years. I did a lot of hiking. I enjoyed the description. Good to be able to walk into nature's beauty. Few places in our world can equal the Alps. Thank you for sharing the excellent poem.

' the ribs of falling night .. .. '

How descriptive is that, and only one of the glorious phrases in this poem. I've read this over and over, rather like standing before a painting, able to see its various nuances. Travelling through, next to, a vast explanse of mountains give an overwhelming feeling of insignifcance somehow because the surroundings are near majestic. Wonderful , ' and the tree line that grabs the swallowed sun.. '
