Your Picture

Your Picture

A Poem by Alexa Tarvid

I saw you today,

Well not actually you

But your picture,

It sat by your roller hockey jersey

And a small plaque that read your name,

Your name right after the words

“In Memory of…”

I wanted to take it,

Hold your picture to my chest,

Put your jersey on,

Breathe you in just one more time,

It’s been so long,

My memories of you seem so far away,

But the space you have left seems new every morning,

Your picture,

Your jersey,

The plaque,

They sat snugly in a case by the gym,

The school where you had gone,

You stopped me in my tracks,

Your face glowing like it always did,

Your arms ready to open up wide

And hold me close,

My finger sat on the glass case,

The barrier my heart felt so eager to break,

So I could hold you close

Just one last time,

To breathe you in

Just one more time,

My memories of you seem so far away,

But I don’t think this pain will ever fully go away,

I saw you today,

Well not actually you

But your picture,

It sat by your roller hockey jersey

And a small plaque that read your name,

Your name right after the words

“In Memory of…”

This is so sweet.
I like the sincerity and the love it reflects.

The constant refrain, the loop unable to be broken is nicely done. Life in death can last as long as the loss remains alive.
