Torn

Torn

A Poem by Elisabeth

Reborn

Telling him my deepest thoughts and desires
was like ripping a quilt apart by the seams

A quilt that had been painstakingly stitched for years by the hands that tried to shape me,

not knowing that I had never wanted to be a quilt,
but a bird
With willful wings to carry me away.

And as the words fell from my wanton mouth I grew lighter
Drifting towards the sky as I was freed from the heavy burden that was their misplaced expectations

A story of my own creation desperately woven as I am torn apart under my own grasping hands and pieced together in the same instant
With fierce wings reaching from my back and a crown upon my furrowed brow.

They weep when they see me
Fearful of what i have become.

Yet I have taken to the sky, a bird reborn into the night.

A phoenix risen from the ashes.
