Through the Eyes of Others

Through the Eyes of Others

A Poem by LolaNicole

I glance at you from the corner of my eye

I turn my head the other way

I lack compassion to know the hows and whys of your suffering

You ask for spare change

“Anything helps” so says your cardboard sign

And years later, karma takes her revenge

Now, I hold the sign

Head hung in shame, heart full of guilt

Refusing to make eye contact

“Anything helps”, I say

But they look at me disdainfully

My pleadings fall on deaf ears

I want to scream at them that I am just the same as they are

That I have a career, children, hobbies, hopes and dreams

I wish I had the chance to change the way the society sees

I wish for the chance to make a difference

I wish for the chance to go back in time, taking with me the lesson I have learned

All I can do though is try to make the best of the present

And keep these hard earned lessons dear to my heart in the future
