Do the Dead Dream?

Do the Dead Dream?

A Poem by Louis McKraker

My mind is transfixed by several questions right now
The most ambiguous of which:
  Do the dead dream?
And, if so do we, therefore, die a little
Each and every night as we sleep?

Further questions dawn on me now:
  Are we living dead?
  Are we dead all but in our sleep?

It's a fairly common belief that we are nothing,
And that only further nothingness awaits us;
But, being neither atheist or nihilist,
I politely disagree with that assumption--

I like the idea that our dreams
Suggest a greater continuum--
If they are not life themselves;
And life itself is in fact death disguised--

really gave us much to ponder here...do we die a little each dream?

and is there something after this?

or just permanent sleep with no dreams...

if it is just nothingness...how empty...

should we stay awake?

nicely written.
