Don't ask me To review.....

Don't ask me To review.....

A Poem by V. Lucien Maier
"

lots of people ask me to review. Read this, if you still want me to review let me know I will be happy to.

"

you don't want that.

You ask me,
I would like you to review these words.
But when I do,
you are stung by my honesty.
You say I am mean,
But I just want you to get better.
You say I am unfair,
but in the end what I say is the truth.

Because in the end I don't give a crap about your feelings,
In the End I only care about your work.

So don't ask me to review.
you can ask me to read and not offer my ideas.
you can ask me not to look at all.
but, don't ask me to review.

because, I take writing very seriously,
and if I see something wrong with a piece I will not stand by,
I will not say you are a great talent unless you are.
I will not lie, or help your ego
I am here to improve my work,
and to help others improve theirs.

I don't know what you are here for,
but don't ask me to review....
Your sweet little heart can't take what I have to dish.

I think you're right when you say that people shouldn't ask for a review on something they wrote if they aren't prepared for blunt honesty. However, I disagree with the fact that blunt honesty has to be something to hurt their ego. If I'm going to review something and say it had it's faults, I wouldn't say it in a way that hurts the person's ego, because they weren't acting conceited at all, they were just looking for help, you know?

Though I think everyone appreciates a good, honest and clear review, I don't think a person should be nasty about it. I also think (actually I know this as a fact) if a person has low self esteem, then they're going to jump in and defend their work if they think that you're telling them they all out suck in the writing field, which is probably a response you've gotten to some reviews. Really, if you're going to be honest then don't be nasty, is all I'm trying to say. ^_^

That's the way it should be, and those are the things I expect in a review. If we really were "great", we'd be published and probably not on this website, actually.

Lucien,

If there is anything I can say it is that yes you are honest, brutally, but honest. Sometimes in a cruel to be kind manner, we end up alienating those who we are trying to assist.

If something is way off, I usually send a personal note, rather than pasting it for everyong else to see.

For everyone out there, consider this fair warning.

All my best,

JC

Very true, I honor that you share how so many here... lie to people when they review and say its good, or amazing and think it may have flaws and don't share them. This site is all about improvement and sharing your work, and getting other peoples opinion. Not to just look at how cool it looks in its own category on the internet.

I still wouldn't mind a review.
I value honesty above everything else.

This is a bit angsty, almost childish.
It sounds very much like the musings of a toddler who hasn't gotten the toy he wants.
If you enjoy honesty so much you shouldn't be bothered when people complain.
They're just being HONEST about their feelings towards your reviews.

They're being HONEST when they tell you that the truth is unfair,
because sometimes it is.
Having written a poem about their complaints you, in turn, have 'stooped to their level',
in essence... complaining about the honesty they place in their opinion of you.

A very paradoxical work, even if you never meant it to be.
Enjoyable.
Thanks for sharing.

Its true. Once someone wrote me a review that was very truthful and was surprised when i said thank you, for the review i am happy for your input. People sometimes think that when you you're reviewing honestly that you're being mean. In my opinion if you really want to be published you have to suck it up and get use to it. i enjoyed the poem and it's honesty.

Yes that was very nice and so honest ,i ve had some troubles in the beginning when i gave my true idea
i was attacked strongly ..so i thought about it ,ha ha ,so i saw the best way is to read a lot
and to review only the good works ,so you dont hurt anyone feelings and if all your reviews were positive
its because it was selective for i just picked up only the good works..what can I do ,i really thought about it a lot
and really no one accepts anything less than your work is great ha ha,its a very difficult job,and this was a very
good write..

I think it's only fair to give your honest opinion. That's what I want people to do when they read my writing. It's not fair to them to sugar-coat it. I think you are right.

I think you seem like the perfect reviewer to me. Honesty is important, but so is not making the writer feel like an utter failure. It seems to me, from reading this poem, you understand that. Sometimes you have to be a little harsh...if you really and truly care about writing..
