A Woman of 1896

A Woman of 1896

A Poem by BeautyFromTheEarth93

Every morning I look out the window and sigh,

There has to be more for me in this life,

Besides being laced tightly in my corset until I cannot breathe,

Only speaking when spoken to,

Having only one lump of sugar in my tea whether I like it or not,

There has to be more,

There must be another way to live,

A better world,

Where I am judged by my mind,

Not my dress or manner of speaking,

But as I walk down the aisle in my white lace gown,

Preparing to marry a man I do not love,

All for security,

I realize there is nothing more for a woman of 1896.

A lot of women in the gold rush got very rich just cooking and dancing with the miners. They were so lonely for a woman they would pay 20$ in gold just to dance and talk to a girl, and if she could cook too, well, she could be rich and retire from her job in a couple months. Do the women today really have it so much easier? Now they compete with men for jobs and I haven't seen a woman president yet. I do not think Hillary is going to be it. This was well written and well thought out, you slipped into those high button shoes easier than those women did. lol great job.

Did you research this?? It's very accurate for someone who didn't live during this timk. Thank god things have changed and I think you portrayed a woman of this time very more.

And I guess that was very true in most parts of the world at that time. We still haven't achieved equality for for everyone, have we? Perhaps one day, I hope.
