freedom to forget

freedom to forget

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

announcing the entrance

of a new year

crickets sit on the windowsill

chirping a staccato serenade

bold moon shadows are determined

to scandalously drape themselves

over places he journeyed

vivid memories warm me

evoking long hidden responses

while heartlessly robbing me

of the freedom to forget

Wow do I love the overall premise of this poem. So many times I've wished for the freedom to forget. Such a brilliant idea. And it's so awesome the way you start out with an innocent overall observation such as the new year, but then the focus intensifies until you're down to the deepest feelings that can't be throttled (((HUGS)))

Memories, even good ones, are often a double edged sword. You convey that lonely feeling of reliving a warm memory that cannot be revisited very well in this piece.

A prisoner held captive with such memories cuff her in. Such intensity but with a warm daydreamy feeling all over. Love it!!! Happy New Year Lydi!

Thanks Lydi!
Oh, the coming of another year! It always plays a melancholy tune for me, though I must admit, the crickets chirping a staccato serenade sounds almost delightful, indeed!

May the new year hold much joy and many blessings for you, Lydi!

I think it's a freedom we don't want to give up, our memories, our love of someone who is no longer with us... we are willing slaves to them so to speak as in many ways they have made us who we are and have made us human...

it is a new year Lydi, one that hold many surprises as well as memories and also the hopes for something better...

HAPPY 2017 LYDI!!!! memories and all!!! and I know you will write us, your faithful and loving readers, many "nice" poems... I know they will filled with "staccato serenades"...

Perfect! I understand the feeling, in my case it is a woman who is impossible for me to forget. You used your words well, Lydia.

She once or was it more than once to scribe into my eyes I love you. Not easy to forget and I, like you, sit chained to memory.

Beautiful Lydia!

Al

Thank you for the review, Divya. Lydi**
when we lose people...we have no freedom to forget...their memories keep us in chains...
and part of us would rather stay there than forget them totally.
