the other side

the other side

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by bariyah25 of wordpress

i reach for the memory
like a child reaching for candy
but it's always on the other side
the other side of morning
the other side of town
the other side of my heart
it's elusive now...sad to say
like a rose petal falling through slats of a bus bench
impossible to catch
so i get behind the wheel
drive fast to absolutely nowhere
honking the horn
trying to get its attention
but the memory is cagey
so evasive
ah, but the buzz of traffic is a sedative
and while i have no idea how or why
i am suddenly at the edge of a cliff
staring at the other side
and smiling like a fool

Ah, memory. I vaguely recalling when mine wasn't so colander like and I could recite pi to 36 digits. Now, I try to recall it and next thing I'm in the fridge wondering why I'm cutting more apple pie.
It fails us all in the end, but with such a beautiful write as this, it proves the fog lifts and let's us relive those fragments, however briefly.
Great artwork too. Very fitting.

The thought of a memory becoming elusive, impossible to catch, sounds heartbreaking. I fear it happening to me for I saw it happen to my grandmother. Hopefully, we can all be smiling at the end of a road well traveled. You touch the nuances of life in extraordinary ways, Lydi!

Thank you so much, Kelly. Lydi**
dear Lydia... the other side of a rainbow is mystical...
you feel the softness of the colors and the melodies of
bluebirds sing in your heart... then frenzy of present day
sounds come alive and drown the sunbeams that once
lay on the waves of ocean smiles... "gather your rosebuds
while you may"... life is a flash of gold on the shore of dreams.
At the edge of a Clift ... we will look at the other side and
keep memories safe where we abide. truly a fragrant bouquet
of flowers spent. as ever, Pat

this reminds me of when i get a thought of something i want to express but i cant catch it again the blip beeped past my beats breaking the plane of my cracked brain:) I run run run to catch up to it but it is gone sorta like that damn muse so i crumple up the paper and throw it to the ground as a misguided scorn of no consequence cause shes not even in the room LOL:) This is a great expression that you didn't lose O'lydia and i love the feeling you gave me in this imagery

Robert, you are a sweetheart. Thanks again.
''like a rose petal falling through the slats of a bus bench''. One of the most original images I have seen in a long while. Not sure if the poem is symbolic or literal. If it's the latter it sounds like PTSD.

Thank you so much, John. I appreciate your review. Lydi**
reminds me of staving off dementia....the finish to the thought is always just on the other side...just out of reach....so close, yet so far.
really excellent allegory here...
