A Poem by Lydia Shutter

artwork by kelsey howard
i think i always knew
from the moment my blue eyes opened
on that summer morn
i knew you would be “the one” for
at least a little while

you fed me words through music
told me i was strong
        a bit self-serving, n’est pas?

we closed the sliding door to the past
allowing the sea air to be our aphrodisiac
the ocean spoke to me
perhaps a siren’s song?

to me you were an unmoored boat
i thought i could be your anchor
the seabreeze told me differently

lies became truths
truths were inconsequential
but i believed it all

and until this day
a small part of me still does

mmmmmmmm ... i can recall that love of my younger years that i threw myself into regardless the risk .. too easy to fool ourselves into believing lies of all kinds .. there is pain in it but for me that far back in years has made it a Cinderella story ... a shared love of two who had not sprouted enough to make flowers happen .. i enjoyed very much where your poem takes me, Lydi. thanks for sharing

So very deep and affecting are your words my friend Lydi. I really am at a loss because this piece took it all out of me. While reading, I subconsciously put myself in "his" shoes and then felt the sadness of what my actions may have caused or the actions in general of the two. How something that seemed perfect and beautiful was lost and still the ocean waits and the world spins as time engulfs those memories when responsibility was only a word found in a dictionary. Perhaps I have misread this but to me, there is a sadness that is blowing in on that sea breeze. Very cool.

That line I knew you would be the one for a little while at least is so resounding with triths and applicalbe to so many of your readers I would presume. Me included. This is a lovely, I presume autobiographical love story and I am glad to have read it.

Then the mystery adds.
"i knew you would be “the one” for
at least a little while"... If only we were all so honest, maybe the heartbreak of splitting could be lessened to a wistful sigh, instead of a "the world is ending wail!"
As always Lydi, you say what we all think when we're being honest with ourselves, and said beautifully too I might add.
Hope you're as well as your pen obviously is. 😊

To me, this is one of your best pieces, ever.
The third and fourth stanzas are just to die for.
The unmoored boat and what the seabreeze said..and the sea being an aphrodisiac...
Marvelous stuff.
