Walls

Walls

Walls

You tore down my wall I built so high

A monument to all my sins and failures

And built a new one in its place

The craftsmanship unparalleled

But foundations built on sand

Where were you when it came crashing down?

At the base with a sledgehammer

The damage done the shaking starts

And you ran away as the foundations crumbled

Now I sit and wonder how

such a wall was even erected

It was the way you looked at me

with those beautiful green eyes

that sometimes had a hint of blue

Exactly like mine

Inviting me to stay forever

It was the way you made me feel so wanted

Telling me that I’m special

Saying how you were so lucky

As I retort that I was the lucky one

It was the way you kissed me

Pressed firm against my face

Holding nothing back

As you almost crush my ribs with your embrace

But in the end my fears were realized

All your kindness was a lie

You tricked yourself to fall for me

And led me like a horse to water

I drank every last drop

We both had doubts but I was steeled

Committed to the bitter end

A promise I made to you that night

As you wept your tears into my chest

You asked for shelter in my city

After you broke our brand new wall

I argued with the guards that saw you

They said you could never come back

After your heinous crimes

They said there is no room for traitors in my city

So now I sit

And watch a new wall being built

Twice as strong

Twice the supports

Built by famous brilliant architects

To keep out temptresses like you

And now you walk the desert

Banished from my sanctuary

Looking for a new place to call home

For someone new to fool

I hope you find another one day

Although I like the thought of you alone

Running out of water in the desert of your life

Begging for shelter at the gates of my new wall

But that’s not you

Your pride is not one to be swallowed

You may find another home

But none as beautiful as mine

You were the princess of my city

One that I’ll miss forever

Author's Note

M.H. Bones
More of a rant than a poem really. Recollections of H. Surprised I haven't written more about her, as writing is a great outlet. Moral of the story: don't let anyone tear down your walls completely. Just let them in the gate.
