Promises

Promises

A Poem by AmeliaGerhardt

We walked down the
path {of life} together
knowing that our destinations
were not the same
Yet,
you convinced me that you'd
still be here
to hold the flashlight
when the sun went down
And then when it rose the
next day, we'd continue.
Together.

The sun set, as we knew it would,
and I was surrounded by darkness.
All I could see was you and
that damned flashlight.
But soon enough, even that light
started to dim
And you left
rather than simply
replacing the batteries.
