Insomnia

Insomnia

A Poem by Michelle Tarnowski

My mind is soaring!

Like a freight train flying,

until the track runs out!

Like a jet in a downward spiral,

until the ground‘s impact!

Like the speed of light,

until the wall breaks the beam!

Neurons are firing!

Are these brain waves or tidal waves?

Too many, too fast, chaos unwavering.

Thoughts are tumbling like monkeys out of a barrel

Jumbled together, scattering across the floor

Running hither and yon

I can’t catch them, and I cant stop trying

The words are forming…

Conceptual contraband that refused to cross in the light

wait until the small hours to breach the calm.

If I trap them in ink and lock them on paper

they won’t escape before the dawn.

I slam the cover of their papyrus cell

Delighting in their imprisonment, I sleep.
