Winter is Coming

Winter is Coming

A Poem by Dave

                 Winter is Coming

The November nights are getting colder

the last glimmer of the fading full moon is

hard to see against the gathering clouds

of the coming winter.

Leaves still clinging desperately to branches

while myriads of their brothers coat the ground.

A stag stands watch beside his doe and chases off

another would be suitor,  the leaves rain down.

Acorns, by the hundreds, thousands crunch

beneath my feet, unfound by the squirrels that

scamper from tree to tree, food for winter

a winter that is coming soon, felt already in the air.

Only the birds of winter remain to add their songs

to the grey and gloom, highlighted only by glistening

snow covered branches and red berries of the holly bush

towering above it, high in the pine tree a snowy owl hoots.
a winter that is coming soon, felt already in the air.

Great job of showing us the approach of winter among the forest creatures. I love all the details you use to paint your dynamic word tableau. We are enjoying 50-degree mornings & 80-degree afternoons, so the critters don't realize winter is coming yet! *wink! wink!* Fondly, Margie

The trees are becoming bare, late afternoon already become dark. Winter has a charm of sorts, but already I am dreaming of the first buds of spring.

Me too!! Take care - Dave
love the "myriads of their brothers" line especially...
i know the East Coast is already getting hit.
even on Southern Illinois all the schools closed yesterday because of record lows and some snow.
you capture the needs met before winter and also the gloom of it...and yet this poem dances on the page.
