Gum Chewing Oration

Gum Chewing Oration

A Story by Matt G

Oration

Gum was first invented around 5,000 years ago. It was first made from birch bark tar. Our gum today isn’t made from that instead most modern chewing gums use rubber in the gum. Gum has improved a lot since it was first made so now Gum is tasty, gum is accessible, and gum is inexpensive. Students should be allowed to chew gum during school because chewing gum curbs cravings for snacks, reduces anxiety in stressful situations, and helps increase academic success.

Chewing gum reduces cravings for high calorie snacks. Students would be less likely to buy junk food at lunchtime and students will be healthier. Students could also choose an alternative such as fruit. Students could start eating healthy. This will help cut down on obesity problems. Would you rather chew gum and eat less junk food, or eat junk food and become unhealthy? Studies in Louisiana State University took 115 people who normally chew gum during school and gave them a lunch. They found out that people who chewed gum three times hourly after eating lunch ate fewer high-calorie snacks. They also had fewer feelings for sweet foods and less hunger. The head researcher, Dr. Geiselman, at CNN.com says “We decreased overall snack intake by 40 to 60 calories.”

Chewing gum helps reduce anxiety and stress. Chewing gum helps you stay focused during schools. Studies have proven this. Students stress over tests, over quizes,

and over homework. Don’t you think that stress reduction for students is a good reason to allow gum chewing? “Gum Chewers showed a reduction in anxiety as compared to non-gum chewers by nearly 17 percent during mild stress and nearly 10 percent in moderate stress” scientists from an online survey say.
Chewing gum helps you do better on homework, quizzes, and tests. Researchers have proved that gum does help you academically. A  studied 108 students, half of them chewed gum and the other half did not. The students with the gum had a 3% increase on their standardized math tests, and an increase on their final grades. Gum is proven to be good. Gum is proven to be good. Even though the benefits of gum chewing only last for twenty minutes, the chewer is still getting some benefits. Again the chewer is still getting benefits.
The craving for snacks, stress relief, and increased academic success should make schools administrators allow gum chewing in school. There have been several studies showing that chewing gum is beneficial to the students work. Why is it then with all these given advantages that gum chewing is still prohibited in school? Why is it?
