Dear Grandad

Dear Grandad

A Poem by The Elusive Mr Dunne

"Dear Grandad"

Dear Grandad, you must be so ashamed of your son/
Never once did you think, he would hate his own son
All the things that he's done, to both him & his mum/
The damage has been done, but his ship hasn't sunk
His mother's just a drunk, yet the son tends to shine/
Unlike the sun in the sky, since darkness entered his mind
Heaven was too hard to find, so he settled for Hell/
They couldn't kill what he rhymed, so they went for the girl
What I went through was Hell, resentful was how I felt/
Where I dwelled wasn't this world, til when I fell like Grenfell
Too ahead of this world, I felt to keep to myself/
The speed of a Gazelle, I thought I could out speed a stealth
Instead they got keys to my cell, & a date for my trial/
Like I was speaking to myself, from the days of a child
I just pray that my child, gets to smile like I can't/
Since the days I was denied, her lying in my arms..

A tragic piece, with family issues, abuse, drunkenness, death, persecution... a lot to digest; loss of hope, future... written very well...was the mother killed by the son? I read it several times to decipher.
Thanks for sharing.
Best,
B.

That was tough. I had to read it a few times. I loved it; it was dark yet not. Loud applause....

Hard tale written my friend. You wrote with honest words and powerful thoughts. Sometimes family isn't kind, isn't right. You left the reader wishing to understand more. Thank you for sharing the amazing poetry and your thoughts.

Family problems are often generational but the good news is that one can always start a new every morning with a willingness to help.

What I think of after reading this is such sadness, and a need to re-read the Book of Ecclesiastes.

Surviving abuse... A soul that could topple for good. These are the things I see here. We all hope for better for our children.

Another solid poem you got here, with a wistful tone and some wonderfully ambiguous storytelling. I love the mixture of different rhyme schemes, and the last line not ending in a rhyme really helped the conclusion pack more of a punch. I wish I could say more, but this had me thinking too much to figure it out. Maybe I'll comment again if I can decipher something. Keep up the good work!
