deep wells are my dreams

deep wells are my dreams

A Poem by Mark Hurlin Shelton

Alone and awake this starless night
with intangible thoughts that gather and scatter like vague ghosts
my fatigued mind battles to grasp thoughts to form
as i unravel my hopes and my fears of tomorrow

Let the sweet sleep of oblivion enfold me
to fade into that sylphic insubstantial sea
where I a blithe child in woolen arms
navigate my roads to recurring castles
to embrace invisible friends in love

deep wells are my dreams, underground streams
in my soft pillow land where unpainted poems dwell
kind sisters enfold me with filial kisses
contained and wrapped in formless warmth
and eternally complete

this my carefree realm
where man cannot corrupt
bright phantom knights wrestle the moonlight
before i rise to find my slumbering feet
shake sleep from eyes
and regather the threads of my day

But now awake in this teeming insomnia
i search myself for sense
and strive to silence and soothe my pacing fevered brain
i will stumble the orphan asphalt streets
and wait for the sun to rise

Tomorrow may I be raised
with a fresh breath of sky in my head
and chance to meet and greet in faith
the guiding angels of my dreams

But now I will wander amongst the murmurs of night
that will not enfold me with filial kisses
nor sew the loose strands of my unfinished dreams.
