Not Wanting to be Famous

Not Wanting to be Famous

Not Wanting to be Famous

Wanting to be big, to be better,

or best, to be noticed,

looked up to, respected, revered ..

Indeed, to be famous,

is not at all, what he wanted ..

On the contrary, it was something,

he rather detested,

despised and he feared ..

After all said and done, he cared

nothing for attention ..

For the most part, he preferred to be

left on his own ..

And in a moment of anguish,

he went on to prove it, by kicking away

that very same plinth

they all seemed determined

to hang him on ..

So when no one was looking, he made

one final statement

and he died there beneath it,

all alone and unnoticed, the very next day ..

I can't think of how difficult it must be if you are a very private person to suddenly be pushed into the limelight and have every inch of your space invaded. I am wondering how the he here suddenly found himself on the pedestal of close scrutiny. Maybe he was was a singer with an adoring fan club? It hardly matters how he found himself in that position, what matters is how he chose to deal with it. Alone and without seeking help for his problem. Now that was tragic and this poem certainly has a tragic ending.

So very sad...............
This kind of reminds me of Kurt Cobain and others. Bowie said he never wanted to be a rock star. Lots of people love what they do and fame follows along. Yet,a life of fame never makes people happy. In fact, it winds up making them isolated and lonely.

Suicide is often a sad result when fame gets bigger than they wanted.

In fact, the song Fame from David Bowie pretty much puts it all into perspective.

Good poem, Neville.

To quote a very recent Rodney Crowell song, "It Ain't Over Yet." and "You can't take for granted, none of this s**t." Rodney Crowell from It Ain't Over Yet. He talks about fame in his song from the viewpoint of one who has had fame, another line in the song, addressing the love of his life Rosanne Cash, "I will quote you now, verbatim, pull your head out of your own behind." That's what fame does to some and some get stuck up there and they never find their way out. I love Rodney and his music. Give the song a listen on YouTube. But find the one featuring Roseanne Cash because the other live version is censored for the word "s**t" It's stupid how people are afraid of simple words which mean exactly what they intend but people then want to punish that word for existing. They don't want s**t and they won't have s**t. I wish they couldn't s**t for awhile until they suffered from as great a constipation in their colon as they obviously do in their squeamish minds and hearts. Nice write here. Carry on, fellow poet. (Lifting my coffee in a toast) Cheers.

your poem .... wow ... powerful, scary in a very different sort of way ... kind of makes me think of tragic losses among our various artists who committed suicide or died accidentally from one type of overdose or another .. even in my limited world too many come to mind ... and those are just the "famous" ones .. hmmmm ... how many unknowns have pulled that plinth up as a coverlet .. and gone to sleep .. love the unique aspect of this poem .. very thought provoking for me .. wishing you well always .. it's Lent and I am on a bit of a beer fast .. but will raise up me coffee mug to ya right this moment ... slainte mhath lad :)
