Dementia’s Cruel Kiss

Dementia’s Cruel Kiss

A Poem by Neville

Dementia’s Cruel Kiss

There were clearly things lost

within himself

quite unlike any puzzle or maze

he had previously

known or ever got lost in before ..

I know what I know

and I know what I saw, he said ..

Yet still, I’m not able

to make sense of them no more ..

this is a very difficult topic to talk about and you approached it with caution and care. dementia is such a cruel disease, as without one's memory are we even human? did we even live the life we had? and it raises many difficult questions for the family. my uncle suffered alzheimers' in his last years. it was hard to get my head around the fact he was once the cool uncle - very active, well-read, and conversational. he was a shell of his former self, but i still loved him. and i carry his memory and legacy wherever i go.

When a loved one suffers with dementia, we all suffer. What may be crystal clear in their mind is just another reason to doubt your own sanity in yours.
I know not the reason behind it and perhaps it is to save their mind from a worse fate, but what I do know is that dementia is a complete b***h and I pray to a god I don't believe in that it stays the hell away from me!
