letter to the future (Part 1)

letter to the future (Part 1)

A Poem by Nico
"

a little fantasy here.....straying somewhat away from my usual type of writing.

"

castle.jpg picture by italianMontrealer  it's an old story that
has been around for many years,
it's an old story and
it will tell you something...

it happened during dark times
when the wind blew much
harder than ever before,
the evil wind of
a terrible disease.

therefore the prince decided
to lock himself up in his castle
alone with his friends,

he thought to stay
locked up there and
to wait until the fear
and the obscurity
would yield and allow his soul to breathe,

wishing this satanic wind to blow by,

salvaging his mind and never come back.

in the castle there was joy
and people had a great time
eating and dancing
and nobody ever
believed that the
evil wind would ever
reach the castle
but at the end it did

despite their false sense of security.

I write you this story because
it sounds like some history that
repeats itself and keeps coming back,

I write you this story
because soon you will be born
and who knows how the city
will look like once that
wind will have died down.

I don’t know what kind of
world you will grow up in,
I only hope that you will be a
son of a new and better society.

Author's Note

Nico
this poem is written and mean't to be thought provoking, since it's fantasy I'm curious to see how my readers interpret this piece. There should be a varying degree of comments and what is important is I want to hear the varying opinions my readers get out of this piece. I hope you enjoy the read and let me know what this poem means to each of you. Some of you may find the story somewhat incomplete and you would be right in that judgement.....it is Part 1 of a series which I'm working on, be patient, I'm working on part 2 and 3:).......Also, if you haven't gotten the chance to read my poem Young hearts with Wings I'd strongly recommend giving it a read.....it is my little own masterpiece I consider.....would greatly appreciate anyone who hasn't read it yet to comment the piece. Thank-you, Nico.

"his only hope was that he would be a son of a new and better society"... a fine wish indeed but, I believe that for society to become new and better each one of us has to contribute to making IT BETTER in whatever ways we can. Whether it be sharing our thought upon this site, chatting with strangers while out and about forming new friendships as our paths continue to cross... who knows if "society" will ever become equal for all, where it is "all for one and one for all"? Difficult it must be since obviously we have miles of improvement to attend to. Perhaps we need to STOP writing history and teaching it to our children... seems as though the history we and our parents were taught just lent the O.K. to continue on as is; repeating and repeating when up against the wall? Gee, I'm done diggin' this hole, it'll depress me if I continue. I do ramble on as I search for the words to express the thoughts within. Letter to the Future... re-read the past, learn from it and please don't repeat. ;~) Bear

Such a baroque picture that fits with the theme. The combination gives way to a mystical tale that's like a romanticized fairy tale for adults. I enjoyed this.

This reminds me of a tale by Edgar Allan Poe "The Masque Of The Red Death " `` Prince Prospero tried to run and hide from the plague but in the end the plague and death caught up with him.
It also reminds me of the condition of our world today, and the fact that history does repeat itself. That being so it would appear that we are near the end of this system of things and the new system will start. We can only hope that the next generations won't make the same mistakes or greater ones. That they will be wiser in all their decisions and doings.
You have given us something to think about. For me the future is frightening to think about.

History always repeats itself it is something that will continue until the end of the world because all men believe themselves to be infallible. The greatest of historians have looked to the past to answer the future's questions. This poem, although fantasy, gives insight to not only this fantastical world but also the troubles of our own world. I like how this poem allows you to read about a story but also see parallels to the real world. Great write,

first of all, excellent selection on the picture. fits this piece well. several interpretations are forming in my mind. throughout history peoples have attempted to isolate themselves from impending doom and tragedies, only to discover that it has a way of touching them anyhow. and dont we still attempt the same today -- whether our apathetic view of global concerns or our fear of actually socializing face to face instead of electronically.? on a personal level, we often try to shield our hearts and spirits and those of the ones we love from the darker side of living. again, the fortress is always compromised and we are left to pick up the pieces as best we can. ,,,a new and better society,,, will come but only if the present generations work for it, no one will gift us with it. we need to shake off,,,the false sense of security,,,and start taking some risks. there is much more here as each read lends itself to a new thought. please let me know when the next installments are posted.

Two castles -- one in the black heart of old Europe, the second in our hearts. When things go well we tend to complacency and are then surprised by some event which drives us into our castles, where we feel safe -- o global warming, it means a few little islands far away might sink, nothing to do with me -- and then we find we were wrong and our defences feeble. I like the theme of the poem very much, but think the wording in one or two places could be fresher i.e. 'having a great time' and 'false sense of security'.

Wow Nico, sounds like a prayer I say every night, hoping that things in the end would be better for my little one too. Loved how you incorporated fantasy with actual reality. Hiding from the world seldom helps, the best way to get through one's life would be to face what ever it throws your way head on. Standing strong, never allowing the little things to get you down....
(Now I must go and follow my own advice, huh?)

Great piece, can't wait to read the next installment

This made me think of crumbling societies and once-great powers such as Greece, Rome, The Roman Catholic Church, England, and now the United States, which is in decline, in my opinion. That "false sense of security" is all around, and the wind is blowing and won't stop, and could blow us all away if we don't learn from the past. It's advice, really. I liked it!

I like this fable, because it's very applicable to our world. The lesson could apply to the way in which we ignore problems -- such as the suppression of civil liberties that have happened to certain individuals, because of their ethnicity. It's happening to someone else, so the rest of us ignore it, thinking "it will never happen to me." It could also apply to the way in which we ignore problems in other countries (genocide in Sudan, or starvation in parts of Africa, etc.). If it's not happening to us directly, and we can sit in our McMansions watching HDTV, we convince ourselves that it doesn't matter.
