KEEPING SECRETS FROM ONESELF

The ever present mask...

It began simply enough...
A smile etched with the impenetrable red
Of a clown's resolve, concealing reality
From casual passersby....

The welling of tears astutely reasonable behind
Facade of seasonal allergy....handkerchief
Loosely held in ready preparation.

Those heart-born dreams once left
Unashamedly to public view were hidden
From intermittent visits of pseudo-friends
Feigning interest in her welfare.

Recently when or if she dreamed,
The dreams were vaguely autobiographical in nature...
Free of imagination, purpose, passion or hope.

Hiding secrets from herself in guise of resignation,
She poured herself a glass of faded memories...
Hands playing the air with wishes
Composed in happier times.
