Candle In The Dark

Candle In The Dark

A Poem by Orpheus

Deep in the darkness
A single light burns
Flickering faintly
Calling the moths to it
A slight wind picks up
And the light flutters
Casting shadows
Over the things
No one should see
These shadows dance
A wild flow
Of myths and legends
A story unto themselves
A History no one
Can ever know
These shadows
Flicker over the small boy
Who watches the candle
Burn brightly
The light reflects out of deep eyes
Eyes that have seen too much
His sadness is great
But as he stares into that little flame
His troubles go away
The wind picks up
Tousling the boys dark hair
He moves his hand to get it out of his eyes
And when he can see again
There is a woman next to the candle
Calling out his name
Calling for him
To come home
Back to the family
That isn't his family
But loves him
Just as much
He stands
And runs to his mother
But asks
If he
Can keep the little candle
To keep the darkness away
So he can sleep soundly
Knowing
The family that loves him
And he loves
Is so close
And he knows he
Is safe
For another night
