The Quiet Man

The Quiet Man

A Story by Kathryn Smith

Years ago, a man and a woman who lived in Durban, South Africa, met and fell in love.

On their wedding day it poured. It's said if it pours on your wedding day it's a blessing!

Not long after, they moved to England and began a family.

They had a son and daughter.

When their son entered college he was an overweight man with very low self esteem.

People didn't give him the time of day.

Many were absolutely cruel to him.

This man, a pessimistic introvert, enjoyed staying cooped up in his bedroom creating music and writing songs.

When he decided to play his music as a solo artist, he wasn't taken too seriously.

He still thought he was rubbish but gave it a go anyways.

To the people who stopped him after gigs and complemented him, he thanked them but shrugged it off.

Fast-forward to today, and the tables have turned for him immensely.

This man is now well loved by many, Including me.

He means the world to me, and I'm glad I discovered him.

I am so beyond happy that he didn't give up.

It would've been so easy.

I give him credit for teaching me of history.

He showed me who I am as a person.

He inspires me to no end.

This man helped me accept my flaws, my darkest fears, and helped me back on my feet.

This man is Daniel Smith.

He was born on July 14th.

Also a French Holiday called Bastille Day.

When things weren't working for him as a solo artist, he decided to form a band.

He hated performing alone anyways.

Because of his Birthday, he decided to call the group Bastille.

Their song Pompeii has dominated the charts.

They've gone on to win awards, sell out tours, and are currently working on a brand new album.

Looking at where Dan came from, to where he is now, makes me incredibly proud of him.

He truly deserves this success.

A very Happy Birthday to the quiet man!

I can't wait to see what the future holds.

Never judge a person by their looks.

That so called "uncool" person you see sitting alone at a table?

Go say hello.

Everyone deserves a friend.

For all you know, he or she could end up winning a Grammy one day.

(And if you want to be blown away by a one man band show watch the link below! Seriously. He's brilliant.)

Kathryn, It reminds me of when I was younger, I used to latch on to new bands or artists and immerse myself in their music, their back stories....just totally IMMERSE myself! I never heard of Daniel Smith or Bastille, so I went to YouTube and listened, first to "Pompeii," and then to "Things We Lost in the Fire." Pompeii was very good (what was UP with the creepy EYES on those characters in the video? Yikes!), but I thought 'Things We Lost...' was so very much better. Thank you for turning me on to a new artist, I will be using 'Things We Lost....' to accompany one of my next writes...great tune. I'm happy for you to have found such an artist who SPEAKS TO YOU through his work! take care...dan

I love the band. More than that, I love how you have brought out how people always make it through what they believe to be their most difficult times.
