The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea

A Poem by Tyler Hipple
"

Something old that I enjoyed at the time so I figured, to hell with it, why not?

"
We all knew how to swim
But I suppose it was much easier to sink
Let go of everything and watch the light escape from our eyes
Detach ourselves from feeling
For to forget to love is to die
And that's what we've craved, right?

We burn through herbs as to melt our minds
Bend the very fabric of space and time
Or so it felt that way
Slowing and twisting as we watched our lives slip from our lips
The weeds in the sidewalk
Misplaced and unwanted

He bought new paints
Hoping to bring colour to his life again
She read old books
Believing that she'd be taken away
Colour never seemed so dull
And those same four walls never seemed so painfully familiar

We are lost at opposite ends of the ocean
Pushing senselessly through currents so strong
Maybe the timing is off but I need you to know that you are loved
And though you may sink, in my eyes, you will never be judged
For I am a stone; unable to float
But sometimes we let the waters do what they must and consume us

Allow our lungs to fill
Gasping for air only to take in more bitter water
Vision will blur and senses will dull
Minds break and ribs crack
We are the same you and I
But you make color radiate and I am a man of gray scale
