Goddess Deity of the River

Goddess Deity of the River

A Poem by John Alexander McFadyen

Goddess Deity of the River

Yami, daughter of Surya

free me from the torment of death

as I immerse in your sacred waters.

You are indeed to be venerated

as you rise in majesty

from the Yamunatri

on the slopes of the Banderpooch,

from the mighty Himalayas to the Ganges basin,

you irrigate and feed the land

and quench the people's thirst.

Some of your best poetry is that which is influenced by myth and legend. You take your own spin on the story and make it come alive in the imagination through your transference of emotion. They become so unique.

No with humble faith and thankfulness for life. Thank you Sheema.
I wonder if you might consider creating a book on here, John, and compiling all of the historic writes you've penned and placing them where we can read them as one collection...I, personally, would love that. Just a thought ;-) Beautiful work, as always.

Man John, every time I read one of your pieces I am blown away by your strong command of words. I can't praise this enough. And I'm not one who's super fond of poetry. However, your work continues to astound me. I honestly have no criticisms. Great job!

I so wanted to like this. I loved the topic. I work with a lot of indians and appreciate their culture which is fascinating. And although the language used is descriptive and blends imagery with fact and I loved reading it. For me I couldn't read it as a poem - can't put my finger on why though? Loved it, but not as a poem? Sorry.

What a fantastic way of thinking about it, a river as a goddess and you have put it so well. I can sense it's presence and relevance to the people around.

Thanks Freida
A stunning poem, the exquisite imagery in depicting the mystique, mythological reference over India's many rivers, full of magical wonders, people's gratitude and reverence towards the river's nourishment and all she provides for them. Wonderfully penned, Mr. McFayden -- Thanks for sharing!
