the same shirt

the same shirt

A Poem by Richard

She wears the same shirt every day,
my daughter.
The one that says “nuts about squirrels”

We caught the same cold last week,
because we played boardgames in the rain.
There was ketchup on her 7 year old nose,
It’s a 7 year old stain.
And a 7-year old pain.
We laughed together this morning,
and we finished tonight.
We once went ballroom dancing at your school in our pyjamas,
We were “from planet X”..
It was Venutian day.
Eating ice-cream from a funnel,
and making a face at the fennel.
You needed me,
like I need your soft round face and multi-colored eyes.

You’re like a kitchen sink cookie. One of those ones where everything but the kitchen sink is involved..
So take a look through your telescope tonight, my ‘jack-o-lantern’,
And you’ll see that I was #1 dad!

Author's Note

Richard
I have a 5 year old son ..and I don't get to be with him as often as I'd like ..almost not at all and I kick myself for it all the time .. but the time we do spend together is always always an adventure everytime
So I tend to write a lot about kids or for kids and I think maybe it's for him .

Such a sweet repose... I love the detail, and the charming way that you wove in all the details regarding what a parent would do/feel with a child. I think that one can only truly understand this connection when they have children (which I don't), but in reading writing such as this, I get close to an understanding. Thank you...

I really enjoyed reading this. I love the nostalgic flow of it all. I'm attending college for Early Childhood Education, so reading poems and stories about children is always a pleasant read for me.
You did very well with this. I like your style. :)
