The City in the Sky

The City in the Sky

A Poem by Pauline Marie Daley

I stepped out into the dark night's light,

And saw a grand city.

It shone and sparkled and lit up bright,

And to the whole world showed pity.

I wondered how something so far away could effect me so much,

How something could be so wonderful, that I couldn't even touch.

As I stood in awe below this grand city,

I watched and listened and said sincerely,

Its amazing, this city our loving God has built.

So beautiful, so strong, we must be filled with guilt.

That we could ever forget that this city was there,

That we could go to our beds and not even care.

This city that shines, it covers the world.

We'll all see its wonderous pearl.

The circle of light in the city square,

Look, can you see, can you see if its there?

But when the circle disappears,

Come sir or miss, meet your fears.

The city itself will slowly fade,

And so will the bright light that it has made.

When darkness comes again, this city appears,

And stop we say, incline your ears.

Stop, and hear the silance of the night,

Stop, and watch the city shine bright.

Stop, because before too long,

The sun will rise, and the city will be gone.
