Something I Just Can't Say

Something I Just Can't Say

A Poem by Penwhill

I look in your eyes yet they aren’t your eyes

I hear your voice and your laugh yet they aren’t yours

Your hugs feel like they always did

Like there is something important you just can’t say

Now here you are,

Sitting at the dinner table

Laughing your heart out

For a moment it feels

As if you’d never left

Here you are

So close yet so far

I feel your visit coming to an end but I do not want you to leave so I walk you to the door

It’s raining outside, for a second I think it’s okay if I cry,

Maybe the rain will drown my tears and you won’t notice

But I don’t, because I see you and

You look like you must feel

Weary, tired

Shoulders slumped under the weight of some secret only you can bear

Eyes clouded with a mysterious fog only you understand,

You avoid our eyes and we avoid yours

You promise to call but we all know you won’t

I don’t want you to leave, but you will regardless so I hug you

Like there is something important I just can’t bring myself to say.

This almost hurt as I was reading it. This is such a realistic rendition of how it feels to be with another person when that other person isn’t really being open at all. This is the poster child portrait of how it feels when you know the other person is just going thru the motions, yet you don’t have the courage to call him/her out on it & get down to the truth. You include so many mundane details, but taken together, it paints a vivid portrait of an excruciating visit/dinner – you nailed it! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
