Night Moves

Night Moves

A Poem by Phibby Venable

Night Moves

I watch a man with his hands
in the waist band of a clean mattress,
a man that crushes his cigarette
into the stubb of a fierce struggle.
You arrived here in a whisper.
Prophesized your heart.
You with your hard roads
mapped by the dark breed
of men that charm rage,
one eye always blackened
from another's man's arm.
I should place blackbirds on watch
in the trees
A rough calling look out
for the soft, for the weak
until l awaken from the long
train of dark'
singing my coffee,
while the tv shows live
a water artist at work,
with a spatula cook.
It is on the tip of my tongue to love you.
Poised, but stubborn, a bad boy waiting
for an opportunity to prove,
good intentions,
just before you slip a silver ride
out of town.
It is in my soft mouth,
unuttered.
Instead I have made love to you.
Unconcerned & gentle, as the night
nodded into
the pale morning moon
All night, until the day whistled in,
and the tip of my tongue grew wary & smart
By then my lips were reluctant
and too soft for syllables.

This is one of those poems that demands a second read-through. Then a third, and perhaps a fourth. Then, when the reader's eyes are finally exhausted, a fifth read is mandated for the sheer beauty of the work. Absolutely incredible poetry. When spoken, it rolls off the tongue like honey and cream. This one goes directly into my favorites.

The imagery is so spectacular it seems more vivid and real than the actual world, it reminds me of how I feel reading Nabokov, though you have a style completely of your own. I'm sure you could take even the most ordinary of things and make it seem utterly beautiful.

This is fabulous. Each image builds on the next presenting a vivid picture. I love how strong each phrase is yet the poem has a softness about it that is perfect. Nicely done.

This is a wonderful write, filled with mixed emotions
Such as life, most of us unfortunately go through each day
filled with mixed emotions about someone or something that has happened to us
I enjoyed this fine piece of poetry

WOW! That is an amazing poem...I have read it a few times now and with each reading I see more to love about this poem.

To grow a rose, you don't start with small rose parts, you start with a bud--and so it is with with poems and epiphanies. The lynchpin of your particular genius (and it is all that, make no mistake) is the ability to take the commonplace and everyday--the "men that charm rage", the "water artist at work,/with a spatula cook"
--and combine them to make whole pieces that are borderline mystical. This piece is Exhibit A in what makes your work so special; It finds that thread that combines the common and elevates it to a higher place.

Your words always defy review. I know of loneliness and words best left unsaid. I don't think I've ever read a more powerful whisper.
