They Said, She Said, He Said!

They Said, She Said, He Said!

A Story by Yellow Butterfly

They said he wasn't worth it, that she was wasting her time, that he was a player, wasn't interested in her and she was no different to the 'others'.  They said she would be better off moving away to start afresh somewhere new where she could meet new friends and a new significant other.  They said she was confused and upset, they were supposed to be her friends, they were the ones she trusted the most.  They were the ones she confided in, they said she could tell them anything.  They said all the things they thought she wanted to hear, giving her false hope by encouraging her to move away.  They said that they had her best interest at heart, and that this would help her get over him.

She said she was homesick now, it had been a good few years away.  She said she needed to return to see her friends.  She said that when she returned they had turned their backs...she said they didn't want to know.  She said looking back now she remembers constantly been told ...he's not worth it, you can do better than him and that they said he just was not that into her.  She said older and wiser now she realised....they never had her back.  Years went by, new lovers came along...but...she said that she could not give them her heart.  She said she knew they were not 'the one' as much as she tried to make things work.  She said she couldn't stop wondering what he was doing now and if he was okay.  She said that she now realises that they were never her true friends.  She said she now knows that a true friendship isn't about being there when it's convenient it's about being there when it is not.  She said they didn't understand her friendship with him ...because they never had the gumption to ask..and no matter how much she said she tried to tell them..they didn't care, they were never interested.   She said they just didn't know her, not like him.   She said she remembers how he would do anything for her, always watching out for her, always making sure she was okay, that's what true friends are for.  She said, things are so different now, she has moved on, she said life is good and she has never been happier.  She said she had some news that day, that he had been asking for her and got her number from a mutual friend.

He said he'd call and he did, that same evening.  He said he nervously dialled and she answered....'hello'.  He said 'hi'.  He said he had been trying to find her for the longest time.  He said he never stopped thinking about her, he said he didn't know what he had done wrong, he said they said she was not interested in him.  He said he always asked for her,  he said they said they didn't have any contact for her when she moved out of town.  He said they said she was over him along time ago and had found new love.  She said...they lied.  He said...he knew.   He said ..the here  and now, is all that matters, no more listening to hearsay.  He said...lets go for a bite to eat and a catch up.

She said...'perfect'...there was a slight pause... then
he said.......'no more talk of what they said!'

This is a brilliant piece of thinking, to go from hearsay, all the way thru a long confusing path, & finally coming back to what is meant to be. I relate to this trajectory becuz, all thru my middle life, I tried to be something I am not, becuz of how everyone tells you how to live. Then I got old & cantankerous, not taking s**t from anyone, & I've returned to being the person I used to be before I tried to change & be what everyone wanted me to be. I love all the details you use to show instead of tell. It seems the phrases "they said" "she said" "he said" felt a little heavy-handed at points, but for the most part, the piece still flows briskly & compellingly (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Learning who to and not trust is a hard lesson. One that comes with a lot of pain and heart ache.
