The corpus callosum is the part of the brain that connects the right hemisphere to the left hemisphere. It is the highway of neural connectivity. Certain information, such as facial recognition, reflexes, differentiated hemisphere control, hand-eye coordination, as well as any other form of action that requires the 2 hemispheres to work as one.

The Corpus Callosum is vital to normal life. However, it is not as vital as the heart. If people who suffer from seizures and epilepsy don’t see any signs of relief, they are advised to get what is know as a Callosotomy. The Callosotomy is the surgical severance of the corpus callosum, breaking the handshake between the right and left hemisphere, and in most cases giving the patient relief.

Only in extreme cases is the corpus callosum severed totally. It is reduced by 25% its diameter when the patient first arrives. If they see no relief, it is reduced to 50% its original size. Most cases are solved here, but if the patient returns saying they have no relief, their corpus callosum is severed entirely. Almost everyone who has this done is cured.

Although the risk is low, relative to other neural surgeries, there are many people who don’t have this. It is common in adolescents or the elderly, usually either the result of a birth defect or as part of an aging brain working too hard. If you or a loved one are considering getting a callosotomy, you should decide to get one as soon as possible. The tissue is still very soft before the age of 10, and 75% of cases are done on children before the age of 5.

The risks associated are similar to those of any other surgery. The fatality rate during surgery is highly unlikely, and no patient who has followed the pre-op orders has ever had any serious injuries. The risk (if any) is worth it, before the operation patients had a higher likely of fatality than after their operation.

Due to advances in the medical field, the chances of total recovery is highly likely. The procedure will take less than an hour, and as of a survey done in 2025, 1 in every 320 (.28%) people living in America have had a Callosotomy performed on them. This is due to the large increase in epileptic patients in recent years.

Neuralasaysia is here to help combat the influx!
