Dreams

Dreams

A Poem by Andrew Durbin
"

There are times, between asleep and awake, when it can be difficult to tell the difference between a dream....and a nightmare.

"
I once found myself in a position
Where my night terrors could have been real.
I tried in vain to make it my mission
That my thoughts I would never reveal.
But then I looked inside and discovered
That my dreams I could never conceal.

All the demons that now are within me
Are mostly my fears and desires.
And throughout the great blackness they spin me,
While they whisper of hell and its fires.
And their voices are madness incarnate,
And my soul, it inevitably tires.

I’ve not been there before, and I’m frightened
Of just what might be shown to my eyes.
And my sense of foreboding is heightened
As I soar through the dark endless skies.
Though I’m tempted to scream, I control it
Though my courage is a poor disguise.

When I’m near in the grip of my madness,
I cry out to whomever may hear.
And my heart is then filled up with sadness,
For I know that there is no one near.
I continue to drift in the darkness,
With my course and my speed both unclear.

I then scream as I come to awaken,
And my body is covered in sweat.
To my very soul’s core I’ve been shaken,
And my memories filled with regret.
It will be long before I can slumber
When I don’t have a notion of threat.

I had few dreams where I was dying or where I was violent. It was quite scary and feel very real. I like your truthfulness and complete honesty at each line. At way it feels like real event behind my eyes.Magical.imagination with horror impact. This feel very refreshing here. Well done.

Okay... now this is so surreal..
The choice of words and the flow was so captivating.
Personally I can relate to this, had some of the worst nightmares where I woke up drenched in sweat..

I loved it

Recently I'm having trouble sleeping and I also keep on having nightmares. Your words spoke right through me. It amazed me. Excellent work!

Indeed, dreams and nightmares can intermingle. What is described here is just such an intermingling, with the nightmares holding the lead. For some reason, I feel PTSD may be involved.

While reading this, its almost like there's more to the dream, like its something real you need to push past. I completely understand this too, hope you're okay though. Greatly written poem speaking of hardship, really enjoyed reading this. Thanks.
