This was written for an assignment for my English class, and, as promised, here it is!
Music: it’s universal, it’s inspirational, and it brings people together. When it came to this assignment, choosing my favorite line from a song was incredibly difficult, but I finally narrowed it down to a lyric from the song “Numb” by Linkin Park. The line reads “I’m tired of being what you want me to be”.This line has often struck me as meaningful and full of significance, and though I don’t necessarily live by it, I find it to bring up a very interesting point. To me this line means be your own person, don’t follow the crowd, and don’t feel as though you have to conform to other peoples’ way of living. It says that it’s your own life and that you don’t have to be what other people want you to be.In my opinion it is one of the most important points that I have ever come across, and it is certainly something that one could live by.I like this line for several reasons, but one of the key reasons is because it’s just so true. Why try to be what other people want you to be? They shouldn’t control you and your actions, and they definitely shouldn’t control your life. It’s your life for a reason.Another reason why I like this lyric is because of the way it’s presented.Notice how it is written in the present tense: I’m tired of being what you want me to be.It means that the author and anyone who can relate to this line has finally had enough and decided to move on from being hung up over others’ expectations.I think that the way it’s presented makes it all the more powerful and full of meaning.Just think: if this line was written in the past tense, would it be as striking as it being written in the present tense? Finally, I like this line because it is so easy to relate to.Who hasn’t been in a situation where they’re tired of having to live up to other peoples’ expectations?I believe that everyone experiences a circumstance like that at some point in their life, and this line truly captures that emotion.“I’m tired of being what you want me to be” is, beyond doubt, a line that holds meaning, importance, and emotion for every human being.
Let me know what you think! Do you agree with my opinions on this lyric, or does it hold some other meaning for you?

Oh numb this song is one of my favs. I like that line too, it has many meanings "I’m tired of being what you want me to be” its like be yourself.. dont follow the others' way in living life. Its like he had a girlfriend and she used him and made him live as she is living. Unfair.. each one have a way to live, different thoughts.. and so on. Maybe someone come to our life and change us but not at all just in few things we shouldn't change completely. Don't do like the others do, a singer wear pink shirt from a store called... whatever I go and buy it NO! was that your normal choice.. a famous person went in a very bad bar I go to there too or doing the same .. well I think the point is clear and it was already clear from you.
Very great !
This is pretty interesting. I know the song does have its fair share of intense lines but I never figured it to have a very different meaning all together.
Why try to be what other people want you to be? They shouldn’t control you and your actions, and they definitely shouldn’t control your life. It’s your life for a reason. Another reason why I like this lyric is because of the way it’s presented. Notice how it is written in the present tense: I’m tired of being what you want me to be. It means that the author and anyone who can relate to this line has finally had enough and decided to move on from being hung up over others’ expectations.
This was something to ponder on. Why be what someone else wants you to be, when it IS your life after all.
Pretty good job. I, for one, am quite impressed. =]
