Broke

Broke

A Chapter by Raef C. Boylan
"

Yep, 'fraid so, I did another one...

"

this that I’m about to drop
is some of that hip hop poetry;
new genre, not gangsta
all about vocabulary,
imagery and originality

big up Scroobius and Riz MC
for inspiring me, making me see
that history could be in the making
if we reach out & start waking
up the world to concepts unfurled -
in-taking s**t and creating pearls
for the boys and girls aching
to hear some substance
in times of messed up circumstance
because you gotta dig
all the panic must be just
when Woolies Pic ‘n’ Mix
goes ‘n’ bites the dust

the Specials must have had a crystal ball:
stroll through the city centre & there’s nothing at all
[“this town is like a ghost town”]
one by one, shops go down
weirdly,  only Tesco’s left around
and do you hear that sound?
it’s the absence of protest,
echo of apathy
indifference has engulfed everybody
[“Am I bothered?”]
like the economy bombed our sense of community
why buy local
when you can drive to Sainsbury’s
it’s less hassle pushing your trolley
through the razzle and dazzle of Buy One Get One Free

whole industries frazzled like bacon
we’ve jumped out of the frying pan
into the pyre of getting fired
or being forced to retire early
because your company spent all its money
on limousines for the suits
so you’re getting the boot
because they can recruit
cheaper labour overseas

it’s a fact of life like the birds and the bees
smell of race riots on the breeze
prejudice spawns with ease
as the unemployed increase
catch the BNP disease
and blame their broken peace -
the entire recession - on immigration
but you see they’re mistaken
lost in headlines of The Sun
and Daily Mail, ignoring detail
like the mindless borrowing they’ve done,
UK businesses they shun,
and savings they neglected
because they were too busy having fun

irresponsibility’s the debt being collected
and who would have suspected
how fast we rejected
common sense
maybe we like it tense,
enjoy the suspense
of being tenants who might not make rent
because it’s all been spent
when we went on the internet
with our intangible, invisible wages
flicked through the pages
of Play.com or Amazon
suddenly our virtual basket was full
and all the money was…gone
