My Definition of A Story

My Definition of A Story

A Poem by Raina Mist

An Author’s Definition of a Story
By Raina Mist

A story is a tale. Real or fake, happy or sad, serious or sarcastic.
A story is an account, a bunch of words describing something, or a new idea.
A story is a person’s way of expressing their self in their own way.
A story is fictional yarn, spun from the filaments of the human imagination.
In a story, you can be whoever you want to be. A pirate, a musician, an adventurer, an astronaut, and everything else in between.
Whatever you want to happen can happen. You can save a world, create a new one, and even destroy one if you so wish.
A story is a game of make-believe you can experience over and over again. Remember when you used to play house with cardboard boxes and stuffed animals. That can come to life in a way you never thought was possible, and all be recorded.
A story is a whole lifetime, maybe even more, compacted into letters and words and sentences, expressed by commas and periods and exclamation points.
A story is something you can have fun with. It doesn't have to take much effort. If you want to write a story, it doesn’t have to be good to everyone else. It just has to be good to you.

Raina Mist
I was bored, so I just wrote, and I came up with this. This is the first proper poem I wrote.

I really like the thought put into this one and I totally agree with your ideas! I especially like the part about creating a world - because you really do create and hold life in your writing. This is a very important subject and I think you captured it really well.

The only thing I could possibly criticise would be the format/layout of your poem. I feel like poems need to breath on the page, and look happier when clearly separated with defined paragraphs and enjambment. It's obviously up to you, but I feel like even a little bit of enjambment and breaking your poem into clear and short stanzas will assist with its flow. After all, poetry is auditory, as prose is visual - so you should consider the effect of you flow on the audience.

Overall a powerful and thoughtful poem! A great read - thanks!
