The Note

The Note

A Poem by Katie Richards

(A subtle cough….)

Is this my end?
Is my wife to be a widow?
Is my soul about to send?
The thoughts in my mind…..
Rushing
Spinning
The cause of nausea
And the regrets of sinning
Is this possible?
How can one human mind comprehend so many thoughts at once?

I am not afraid.
My motive is well in mind
But her?
How could I do this to her?
These evil parasites
Devouring
Smoldering
Eating at me
Eating at our bonds…
“I’m sick,” they say again and again
“I’m sick,” I say eternally

Dear,
My coughing was overpowered by God’s voice. He told me to hold tight..I will hold tight as long as you’re hand is clasped in mine.

If this is my end……….. I am not afraid. I am forever strong. I am forever the example. I am forever good motive. I am forever God’s child. I am forever a follower. I am forever a brother. I am forever a son. I am forever an uncle. I am forever in your heart.

                Love,
                     John

Author's Note

Katie Richards
My brother was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer two weeks after I got out of the hospital for spinal fusion surgery. One day, he thought he was going to do. He wrote his wife a note....I put the depth of his dispair in these words. Thankfully, he is alive and doing great. We just hope for the best! :)

How sad, but so sweet and romantic. A great story of a bond between husband and wife.
