Chapter One: Rebirth

Chapter One: Rebirth

A Chapter by TangledUpInBlue

One dark full moon night, the lives of Adena, Emilia, Tallulah, and Demi would change forever and the town of Maybrook would never be the same again.

"There is nothing to be afraid of girls. You are in no danger here," said the tall woman standing in the middle of the room. The silver of her cloak and matching hair was intensified by the glow her body was giving off. She was smiling warmly at the four girls pressed against the wall. They had no idea how they had gotten there.

"I apologize for having brought you here in such an odd manner but I need to speak very urgently with you girls. What I'm about to tell you needs to be taken seriously no matter how absurd it sounds and I would like no interruptions," she said turning to Adena who had opened her mouth to say something. She glared at her but stayed quiet. "I don't expect you to understand it all right now but I would like for you to keep in mind that this is something much bigger than yourselves and what you once thought was only fantasy. What I'm about to tell you will change your lives forever if you choose to accept it. My name is Aurora and I am a deity from another world not so different from your own. I came here way before the town of Maybrook was ever established and I was immediately drawn in by the richness and power of the land. I lived here for far too many years than necessary for a deity. Now I have returned immensely burdened by the power I possess that I feel is no longer mine. I knew from the moment I decided to give up my powers that I must hide it here in the land I love so much. The only problem is that in the wrong hands this power can cause a lot of evil and I can't let that happen. Fate has chosen you four girls to be the protectors of my magic and keep this town safe from all evil that comes to it."

Adena looked around at the other girls and saw a reflection of her own face in theirs. They were all bewildered.

"So let me get this straight," said Adena tossing her long red hair over her shoulder "You're saying you're a goddess from another world recruiting us to be protectors of Maybrook and your magic? Are you insane? Do you expect us to believe you?" Aurora's serene appearance never changed.  She folded her pale thin hands in front of her.

"I do expect you to believe me. Look at me. Do I look normal to you? Can you not see my glow? How much more proof do you need?" Adena didn't say anything but her deep blue eyes had never looked away from
Aurora. She had stared at her with awe.

"Why us?" asked Demi furrowing her brow. "I'm not saying I believe you but..." She nervously tucked her black hair behind her ear.
Aurora smiled at her.

"It was fate. Each of your elements pulled me to you. It was then that I knew it was to be you that protected my magic. I can trust no one else to do it."

"What do you mean our elements?" asked Emilia stepping forward.

"Each one of you has a power inside you to control and manipulate the elements. I'm sure you've heard of earth, wind, fire, and water. That's in you. Each one of you has an element."

"I don't think so lady. This is crazy! You’re saying we have powers inside us? Don’t you think I would have known if something weird was going on with me?" Adena’s long legs allowed her to walk around the room more quickly as she calmed her nerves. She didn’t want to lose her temper.

“Your powers have been dormant and only I can awaken them. It’s always been in you and it’s what makes the four of you so special. You were born with this gift but without any guidance it never developed.”

"You said we had a choice right?" said a quiet voice from the shadows.

"Yes that is correct. Come out of the dark dear. I would like to see you." Slowly Tallulah walked forward blinking back several times to adjust her crystal blue eyes to the light.

"What are our options?" she asked softly.

"Wait you're actually considering this? You're just as crazy as she is!" said Adena stopping in front of Tallulah. She threw her an aggravated look before continuing her pacing.

"I don't know you so you can think what you want. I want to know my options." Aurora smiled gratefully at Tallulah.

"You can walk out of here and forget all about this or you can let me awaken the powers inside of you and help me protect my magic." The girls were deep in thought and even Adena had stopped to think.

"I'll do it," said Tallulah after a long moment of silence. All eyes were on her. "Have you never felt like you were meant to do something more than what life was giving you? I've felt it all my life and I've been waiting for a moment like this to become a part of something that can make my life worth living for." She smiled nervously at Aurora and gave a little shrug. A light shade of pink began to appear on her porcelain skin.

        "Thank you Tallulah,"
Aurora said bowing her head to her. She looked at the other three girls. "Is she the only one? She can’t do it alone.”

"Won't it be dangerous?" asked Emilia shrinking away.
Aurora sighed.

"Sadly what I ask of you won't be an easy task. You will be tested everyday with difficult situations and evil beings that want to take my magic but with time you'll learn to use your powers as a weapon."

"You're serious aren't you?" said Demi staring at
Aurora intently. "This is no joke?" Aurora shook her head.

"I'll do it too," said Emilia walking over to
Aurora. She looked up into the deity’s angelic face. Demi shook her head not believing what she was about to do.

"Me too," she said standing next to Emilia. Tallulah followed Demi and made a semi circle next to
Aurora.

"How about you Adena? These girls can't do this without you."

"I don't know them. They're crazy! I can't do this!" She walked around them and towards the door.

"Do you want to feel alone your entire life? Your mother is never around. You are alone. Why not become a part of something that will change your life?" Adena stopped walking and slowly turned around.

"How do you know that?" she asked, her voice catching in her throat.

"I know everything about you Adena, everything about all four of you." Adena thought really hard. There was emptiness inside of her that she had felt for many years. Maybe the time had finally come to fill the void. She slowly walked back towards the girls and completed the circle.

"What do we have to do?"
Aurora held out her hands. Tallulah grabbed one hand and Adena the other. It was a gentle fragile hand but the power was there. They could feel it. Demi and Emilia held hands as well completing the circle.

"You will feel your power flowing through you. Don't fight it. Let me do all the work."

Aurora closed her eyes and the girls did the same. At first nothing happened but soon they could see Auroras soft glow grow brighter beneath their eyelids. A powerful pull began inside them trying to make its way to the surface. Their bodies began to feel light and every inch tingled. The wooden panels were rattling and the floor was vibrating beneath their feet.

The girls opened their eyes and looked down at the floor. They were levitating and spinning very slowly.
Aurora's glow had gotten so bright it was hard to look at her directly. The room was falling apart with all the power but no sound could be heard as the wood panels crashed to the floor. The magic flowing from Aurora was everywhere. Flowers and trees were growing all over the room. Fire was engulfing the broken wood panels and rivers were flowing from the corners of the room. An inaudible wind was moving the trees violently nearly lifting them off the floor.

Feeling the power all around them, the girls no longer felt scared. They closed their eyes again and let the magic flow in and out of their bodies as their powers were awakened. When Aurora opened her eyes everything stopped and the sound rushed back into the room.               It was as if nothing had happened.

"Adena you are fire. Fire is energy, assertiveness, and strength." Bright red flames surrounded Adena’s body surprising her. "There is no need to be frightened. It is your power. Emilia you are wind. Wind is intellect, creativity and life." A gust of wind wrapped itself around Emilia blowing her curly brown hair in all directions. "Tallulah you are water. Water is emotion, healing, and divination." A deep blue stream of water splashed around Tallulah. "Demi you are earth. Earth is stability, order, and prosperity." Thick green plants wrapped around Demi’s body.

They all stared down at their powers in amazement. There was a glow in their eyes and they couldn't help but smile. It was like nothing they had ever seen before. All doubt was erased from their minds.

As soon as Aurora let go of Tallulah and Adena's hands, the elements around them disappeared.

“You are elementals now and have immense power. I know this town and my magic will be safe. It won’t be easy but if you work together you can fight any obstacle that comes your way.”

“This is amazing Aurora. I’ve never felt so alive in my life,” said a very cheerful Emilia.

“Concentration and practice is the key to bettering your skills.” Aurora walked to each one of the girls and observed them as they tested their powers.

Adena snapped her fingers and a small flame danced on her finger tips.

Emilia closed her eyes and let her powers flow through her. A light breeze began to form around her and she pushed it out creating a gust of wind.

As Tallulah gently moved her hand, a thin stream of water began to form never falling to the floor. As she moved her hand around, the water moved with her.

Demi didn’t know what to do at first but letting her powers guide her she concentrated enough to send leaves and branches crashing through the room scaring the girls. Using the scattered leaves she was able to grow vines and a thick brush on the wall.

“Excellent girls! With time and practice you will be able to do many things with your elements. Now it is time to do my part. Please step back.” The girls did as they were told and took several steps away from Aurora.

Aurora raised her hands above her head and began to murmur under her breath. Wind was blowing all around the room but it wasn’t Emilia. The room began to shake violently as Aurora’s glow began to move towards her stomach and waves of power shot all around causing lightning and fire. The girls stepped further away. This went on for a couple more minutes and when Aurora’s glow was in her hands she opened her eyes. She took off her cloak and wrapped the light with it. Without her glow, Aurora looked like a human in a simple dull beige dress and her features were clearly visible to the girls. She was still perfect though and still angelic.

“I will place my magic in Theodore Wentworth’s mausoleum.”

“In the founders’ tomb?” asked Tallulah.

“It is a safe place for my magic. I have prepared the mausoleum for it and have set up the protective spells.”

“How will we know if someone is trying to take your magic?” Adena asked playing with the flame that was in her palm.

“All four of you have a link to my power. It’s what awakened you. If someone tries to get to it you’ll know. The feeling isn’t so pleasant.” Aurora stood tall and graceful. She didn’t need her magic to look like a goddess. “Before I return you all back home I must give you one last warning.” The girls stared attentively at Aurora. “Trust no one but each other. I’ll come see you whenever I can but you can’t even trust me. Without my magic I’m afraid I don’t know how vulnerable my body can get or if I’ll change over time.”

She slowly walked to each girl and gently kissed their foreheads. “My girls it is time to embark on your new life full of adventure and danger. There are still many things you need to learn about this new world but all in good time. Keep each other safe.” One moment the girls were standing in front of Aurora and in the blink of an eye she was gone. The room began to change around them as each girl was returned home.

That night, Adena, Emilia, Tallulah, and Demi were reborn as elementals and each were happy with the power that had been awakened in them not fully realizing how complicated their lives had just gotten.

It was an interesting chapter, though there are a few things I would've done if I were you, you could make a nice intro, you know, instead of starting from what seemed like almost the end, you know, show a little bit of each character in her daily life, to get to know each character and their personalities, then something must have happened for this deity to appear and chose them to protect the town/city, which I assume has something very important worth protecting if it's going to be raided constantly, so I guess journeying around the world doesn't sound like the best option, anyways, you might also want to consider their limitations as humans unless they're not, you know, limits, humans have limits to obtained powers, they cannot exceed certain amount of power without a consequence on their bodies be it physically or mentally, every time they use certain bit of power it consumes energy, energy which is vital to battle, and if they use too much, they might faint or even die if they use it all, it's what it means to be a human.
